There is a dire need for a low-cost, low-risk ventilation option

Healthcare systems are facing an unprecedented crisis in respiratory care due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shed light on the strained global supply of ventilators especially at a time of need.

Coupled with high population density and relative poverty, the procurement, building, or buying of new emergency ventilators can be challenging for some infrastructures. Current low-cost ventilation options are often not safely implementable, forcing hospitals to decide between safety and affordability.

iSAVE, A Patient-Specific Ventilation Expansion System

98b0706b-09a2-424d-b49c-fcd5b97da08e.jfif

The Project Prana and Indventr teams have developed the iSAVE, a low-cost respiratory care expansion device that can immediately and safely double the capacity of ventilators, CPAP machines, and high-flow oxygen concentrators and in turn double the number of patients you can serve at a tenth of the cost.

The iSAVE can safely adapt an existing ventilator into two circuits to serve two patients while providing individualized control over peak respiratory pressure, PEEP, and tidal volumes, making multiplexing a safer option.

Expanding Ventilator Capacity Globally

We are currently equipped to take orders from Indian hospitals, and care facilities. The iSAVE received the All India CDSCO approval in April 2021.

We have delivered devices to 15 hospitals in India and we're collaborating with organizations, healthcare institutions, and startups worldwide to extend the reach of this technology to better bolster capacity and emergency preparedness.

What You Need To Know

Information for doctors, hospital administrators, and donors who are interested in ordering the iSAVE or supporting the initiative

How It Works

Our Individualized System for Augmenting Ventilator Efficacy (iSAVE) utilized a proprietary set of valves and controls to allow a single ventilator to provide personalized support to at least two patients. iSAVE enables independent control of volume and pressure for each patient and incorporates safety measures to accommodate sudden patient deterioration and cross-contamination. The iSAVE can facilitate a rapid expansion of the ventilation capacity of hospitals for a fraction of the cost of a new full-function ventilator.

This system has been designed specifically for the management of ARDS during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been validated on ICU ventilators and in vivo animal models.

Features

The iSAVE uses a series of valves and flow regulators in parallel limbs to effectively maintain the desired tidal volume (VT) and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) for each patient, customizing therapy for each patient.

  • Personalized, Safe, Respiratory care device: A traditional ventilator supports one patient; iSAVE multiplexes a ventilator to two patients and can customize treatment to each patient’s respiratory needs. The iSAVE enables patient-specific volume and pressure control, have valves to mitigate cross-contamination between patients and accommodates changing patient mechanics.

  • Increased Safety and Reduced Oversight burden: The iSAVE has digital monitoring of respiratory parameters to make multiplexors safe. Because the monitor is portable, the monitoring can be done outside of patient rooms in a centralized ICU space, 1) reducing exposure risk to physicians and nurses, 2) centralizing workflow, 3) increasing oversight, and 4) decreasing nursing burden.

  • Ease of Use and Assembly: The GUI features alarms and management similar to existing respiratory monitors making it familiar to users. It can be assembled in less than 10 minutes, even by a non-medical technician. Consumables utilized with this device would be the standard filters and tubing required for ventilation of patients supplied by the hospital.

  • Competitors: No known competitors. Other similar approaches do not offer personalization of therapy or digital monitoring.
